Something happened today that absolutely stunned me, and saddened me simultaneously: Arthur C. Clarke passed away. It shouldn’t be entirely surprising, as Sir Arthur was 90 years old; he had certainly lived a long, fulfilling life.
Even now, I’m having difficulty explaining what effect Mr. Clarke’s writing has had on me, personally. I have read a large amount of his work, though admittedly, very little of the copious amounts of writing he has published.
Arthur C. Clarke was a crucial part of my introduction to science fiction, and literature in general. The first book I can remember reading of his was Rendezvous with Rama. Quite literally one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read, it was a huge inspiration to me, not only as a reader, but as an aspiring writer.
